Bunker Trails

Map Library

One of the primary functions of this project is to provide resources for outdoor enthusiasts to explore the natural beauty of Albania. Our map holdings consist primarily of topographic maps and are categorized by publication data. Each of these collections can be browsed and their contents downloaded through the map library.

Collection Information

Background

The 1:50,000 Soviet Topographic Collection (UCB) originates from the University of California at Berkeley. Unfortunately, the collection is no longer directly available from U.C. Berkeley, and was obtained from a mirror site. This collection contains near-complete coverage of Albania, lacking one map in the Dibër region. These maps are numbered according to the Soviet mapping standards and cover 10 minutes of latitude and 15 minutes of longitude. Publication details can be found in the peripheral areas of each map, and U.S. Army Technical Manual 30-548 (24.28 MB) provides an excellent introduction to reading Soviet topographical maps.

Technical Data

These maps were created using the Krassovsky 1942 spheroid, the Pulkovo 1942 datum, and are drawn in the Gauss-Kruger Zone 4 Projection. It is important to note that the coordinate system used in these maps is not the same as is used by most consumer grade GPS units. If these maps are intended to serve a navigational purpose, please ensure that the appropriate steps are taken to ensure navigational accuracy. A brief introduction to map projections is available from Wikipediaand a more advanced discussion of the topic is provided by ESRI.

Copyright

The copyright holder for this collection is disputed, and these maps are provided for fair use. They are of Soviet origin, and derived from Italian survey data completed in the 1930's. These maps represent the combined efforts of many individuals and governments. The images have been marked for tracking purposes. If unmarked images are required, please contact the project.
